Why Your Brand Needs Powerful Imagery: Insights from Caroline Murray, The Portrait Boss

In today’s digital-first world, your brand is more than just a logo or a tagline—it’s a visual identity that speaks volumes before you even say a word. As business owners, we understand that first impressions matter. But are we truly harnessing the power of professional brand photography to make an impact?

Recently, I had the pleasure of speaking with Caroline Murray, also known as The Portrait Boss, on my podcast, Cut Through the Noise with Aisling O’Rourke. Caroline is not just a photographer; she is a brand strategist and visual storyteller who helps business leaders create imagery that resonates with their audience. Here are some key takeaways from our conversation.

What is Brand Photography and Why Does It Matter?

Brand photography is more than just headshots, it’s about communicating who you are, what you do, and why it matters. As Caroline explains:

“It’s about distilling the essence of a person into an image. It’s about how you want to be perceived by your audience and ensuring that perception aligns with your brand goals.”

In an era where everybody with a smartphone thinks they’re a photographer, professional brand imagery sets you apart. A well-executed brand shoot ensures your online presence matches your credibility and expertise, ultimately driving sales and engagement.

The Power of Portraits in Storytelling

Caroline’s expertise in portrait photography stems from years spent in the darkroom, mastering her craft. What she discovered is that a single image can tell a powerful story.

“A striking portrait isn’t just about lighting or posing, it’s about connection. If the eyes aren’t connecting with the audience, the image isn’t working.”

This emotional connection is what stops the scroll on platforms like LinkedIn, Instagram, and TikTok. People buy from people, and authentic, well-composed images build trust with potential clients.

Bridging the Gap: Overcoming Fear of the Camera

Many of us, myself included, find being in front of the camera daunting. But working with a professional like Caroline changes that experience entirely. Before the shoot, she conducts a detailed brand questionnaire that helps clients define their goals and expectations.

“We create a roadmap for your shoot—everything from styling and location to brand messaging. I want clients to step in front of the camera feeling confident, knowing that the images will serve their business for years to come.”

For solopreneurs and hybrid workers, who may not have traditional office spaces, Caroline recreates professional, polished environments in carefully chosen locations, ensuring that brand consistency is maintained across all platforms.

When to Refresh Your Brand Photography

One of the biggest mistakes businesses make is using outdated imagery. As we evolve, so do our brands, and our visuals need to reflect that.

“If your brand imagery no longer aligns with your audience or business goals, it’s time for an update. Typically, professionals should consider a refresh every three to five years, especially if they’ve undergone significant career changes.”

Having a strong catalogue of professional images also makes content creation easier. Clients who work with Caroline often find themselves more active on LinkedIn, Instagram, and even TikTok because they have a powerful bank of visuals ready to use.  Having been through the process with Caroline I can honestly say creating content for The Communications Coach has become so much easier now I have images I actually like to use.

Why Invest in Professional Photography?

Brand photography is an investment, but the return on investment is undeniable. It enhances credibility, boosts confidence, and ensures that your audience sees you as an expert in your field.

For me, my session with Caroline was transformational. As someone who has spent most of my career behind the camera, I was nervous about stepping in front of it. But the experience made me see myself, and my business, in a whole new light.

“When clients see their final images, they often feel a renewed sense of confidence in their brand,” Caroline shares. “They start marketing themselves more boldly, reaching for bigger opportunities, and ultimately growing their business.”
